Writing Task 2

Some people believe that printed books are no longer necessary in this digital era as all writings can be stored electronically. Others think that printed books still play an important role. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample answer – 28 January 2023 – Evening Shift

The debate over whether printed books are still necessary in the digital era has been ongoing for some time. On one hand, some argue that printed books are no longer necessary as all writings can be stored electronically. They argue that electronic books, or e-books, are more convenient and accessible as they can be easily downloaded and stored on devices such as smartphones, tablets, and e-readers. Additionally, e-books take up less physical space, making them a more environmentally-friendly option.

On the other hand, there are those who argue that printed books still play an important role. They argue that there is something special about holding a physical book in your hands, and that the tactile experience of turning the pages and smelling the ink on the paper cannot be replicated by an electronic device. Additionally, printed books do not require batteries or internet access, making them more reliable in case of power outages or other disruptions.

In my opinion, both printed books and e-books have their own unique advantages and disadvantages. Printed books are great for those who enjoy the tactile experience and do not mind the inconvenience of having to physically store them. However, in today’s fast-paced world, e-books are more convenient and accessible, as they can be easily downloaded and stored on devices.

Furthermore, for students and professionals, e-books are a great way to access research materials, texts, and journals quickly and efficiently. They can also be searched and highlighted, making it easier to study and take notes.

In conclusion, while both printed books and e-books have their own unique advantages and disadvantages, I believe that both are still necessary in this digital era. Printed books provide a tactile experience and do not require batteries or internet access, while e-books are more convenient, accessible and efficient. It ultimately depends on personal preference and the purpose of the reading.
