Describe a person you know who is from a different culture or tradition

Well, India is a diverse country and there are numerous states that have distinct cultures and traditions. Here I would like to talk about a person who is from a different culture.

Actually, he is none other than my best friend, Arnav. As I live in a metropolitan city, I vividly remember, when I was in 10th grade, a Gujarati boy was enrolled in my class. This was because his family got shifted to Punjab due to his father’s job transfer.

Because of my friendly nature, within a few days, we became fast friends. We are still in touch. He lives a stone’s throw away from my home town. We often play football in the playground in the evenings.

As I am an innovative person, I have a keen interest in his language and culture. So he told me a lot about his background. Even he taught me a few Gujarati words in his spare time.

After spending quality time with him, I opine that he is quite a kind-hearted and industrious person.

When he came to Punjab, he did not know the Punjabi language, but now he is quite fluent in Punjabi as well. Besides this, whenever I visit his abode, his mother welcomes me with open arms and offers me Gujrati cuisine. Dhokla has become one of my favourite dishes now. Moreover, I also enjoy their traditional dance Garba.

To top it off, he is a person I know from a different culture.

Where and how can we get to know people of different cultures better?

Well, in this contemporary era, social media is the most effective platform to interact with people from different cultures. Social networking platforms like Instagram and Facebook allow individuals to find new friends, who may be from different states and countries.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of cultural diversity?

There is no doubt that every coin has two sides. Likewise, cultural diversity has both pros and cons. If I talk about benefits, then I can say cultural diversity makes this world beautiful as individuals have something to learn in this world. However, there are few people of distinct cultures throughout the world who consider their culture superior to others. But I personally believe that cultural diversity is crucial to living a meaningful life.

Which Indian traditions are disappearing?

As far as I know, most of the youngsters are under the influence of western culture. Thus, most of the Indian traditions are disappearing day by day, such as joint families, lifestyles in the countryside, and hospitality. In my view, this is not a positive sign for most of the Indian states.
