Sample Answer –

(4 February 2023 – IELTS exam – Morning shift)

The bar chart depicts the changes in the employment fields of American adults between 2003 and 2013 as a percentage. During this ten-year period, the percentage of people working in education and training, hotels, building, and self-employment increased, while the medical and business sectors saw a decrease. The unemployment rate also declined.

In 2003, 8%, 3%, and 10% of American adults were employed in education and training, hotels, and building, respectively. However, these figures increased to around 20% over the following decade. The percentage of self-employed people also nearly tripled, from around 10% to just over 30%.

In 2013, a quarter of the American working population chose self-employment, which had decreased from 2003. On the other hand, the medical industry saw a decrease from 20% to 10%. These changes indicate a shift in the employment landscape of American adults over the decade.

Writing task 2

Some people think that it is necessary to use animals for testing medicines or other products intended for human use. Others, however, criticize this as animal cruelty. Discuss both of these views and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer – Band 7+ (4 February 2023 – IELTS exam – Morning shift)

Animal testing has been a controversial issue for many years, with proponents arguing that it is necessary for the development of new medicines and other products intended for human use, while opponents criticize it as animal cruelty. In this essay, both views will be discussed and a conclusion will be drawn based on personal opinion.

On the one hand, proponents of animal testing argue that it is a crucial step in the development of new medicines and products. They argue that animal testing provides valuable information about the safety and efficacy of these products, which is essential for their approval for human use. For example, by testing a new drug on animals, scientists can determine the potential side effects and make necessary adjustments before it is tested on humans. This can prevent harm to human participants and ensure that the drug is safe for human use.

However, opponents of animal testing argue that it is cruel and unethical to use animals for these purposes. They argue that animals have the capacity to feel pain and suffer, and that testing on them is a violation of their basic rights. Moreover, they argue that there are alternative methods for testing new products, such as cell cultures and computer simulations, which are more humane and accurate. These methods can provide the same information without causing harm to animals.

In conclusion, animal testing is a complex issue that requires careful consideration of both sides of the argument. In my opinion, while it is true that animal testing provides valuable information about the safety and efficacy of new products, I believe that alternatives should be sought whenever possible. Animal testing should only be used when it is absolutely necessary and when there is no alternative. In such cases, the welfare of the animals should be a priority, and their pain and suffering should be minimized as much as possible.
