Sample Answer -25 Feb 2023 IELTS exam Review
In recent years, fresh food like vegetables or fruits is often transported over long distances from rural areas or farms to reach customers in urban areas. This trend has both positive and negative aspects, and in this essay, I will discuss the reasons behind this trend and evaluate its impact.
On the one hand, the transportation of fresh food over long distances is mainly due to the increased demand for fresh produce in urban areas, where agriculture is not possible due to a lack of space and resources. This demand has led to an expansion of agricultural production in rural areas, which in turn has necessitated the transportation of fresh produce to urban areas. Furthermore, technological advancements in refrigeration and transportation have made it easier and more cost-effective to transport fresh produce over long distances.
On the other hand, the transportation of fresh food over long distances has negative environmental impacts. The transportation of fresh produce requires a significant amount of energy and produces greenhouse gas emissions, which contribute to climate change. Additionally, long-distance transportation can also result in food waste and loss of nutrients, as fresh produce often loses its nutritional value during transportation.
Overall, while the transportation of fresh food over long distances has positive aspects such as meeting the demand for fresh produce in urban areas, it also has negative environmental impacts. Therefore, efforts should be made to reduce the negative impact of this trend by promoting local and sustainable agriculture and reducing food waste. Consumers can also contribute to reducing the negative impact of long-distance transportation by choosing to purchase locally grown produce and reducing food waste at home.
In conclusion, the transportation of fresh food over long distances has both positive and negative aspects. While it helps to meet the demand for fresh produce in urban areas, it also has negative environmental impacts. Therefore, it is important to promote sustainable agriculture and reduce food waste in order to mitigate the negative impact of this trend.
